Research focuses:

  • Hydrogen production by gasification of biomass (wood pellets) and by dehydrogenation of hydrocarbons

Project examples:

  • Methanization of carbon oxide-containing fuel gases for the conditioning of feed gases for fuel cell devices and H2 storage (TAO research training group)
  • Dehydrogenation of n-paraffins (Evonik)

Prof. Jess is a member of the selection committee for the research programme “Innovationslabore für Wasserstofftechnologien” of the State of Lower Saxony.

Inorganic Chemistry II - Catalyst Design

Research focuses:

  • Hydrogen production by photocatalysis
  • Design of new catalytic reactions in which hydrogen is released and CO2 (diluted in air) is converted into important chemical compounds

  • Normal DFG (German Research Foundation) procedure for two current projects

  • Nanostructured and ordered-porous photocatalysts for the production of green hydrogen
  • Nanostructured photoelectrode thin films for solar energy conversion
  • Investigation of semiconductor properties and charge carrier dynamics using extensive spectroscopic methods

Project examples:

  • New materials as photocatalysts for solar water splitting (BaCaTeC)
  • Mesoporous mixed oxides and composites for photocatalytic and photoelectrochemical water splitting
  • Iron-based semiconductor oxides for sustainable solar energy conversion

Research focuses:

  • Photocatalytic production of hydrogen 

Project examples:

  • Continuous hydrogen production by photocatalytic water splitting using Janus fibres and spider silk nonwovens (DFG)

Junior Professor for Colloidal Systems

Research focuses:

  • Electrocatalytic water splitting
  • Material development (bio-inspired crystallization, nanoparticle synthesis and assembly, electro-crystallization)

Project examples:

  • Nanostructured cobalt oxide materials for electrocatalytic water splitting (DFG, SFB 840-TP B9)
  • In-situ small and wide angle X-ray scattering at electrochemical energy systems
